Facility Inspections
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an impressive grade in inspections. Inspections ended up being its best category. In that category, we gave this facility an A. Inspection scores are based on several datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that score well in this category have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Adding to its first-rate assessment, this nursing home also was given a strong long-term care score, with a grade of A-. Facilities that receive this type of grade in long-term care typically provide consistent around the clock care to make sure residents are well cared for. After considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is significantly higher than the majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
This facility was given a strong short-term care score as well. We awarded it one of our higher grades in that area with a score of B+. In computing these short-term care grades, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The goal is to create a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Fortunately, it looks like this facility employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these types of nurses. However, according to the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final statistic we considered in this area is the percentage of patients who returned home from the nursing home. We found that 5.1 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.
