Nurse Quality
Although this facility's overall grade wasn't a highlight, it actually received a somewhat respectable grade in nursing. We gave it a B- for that category. Our nursing grade assesses the facility's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of licensure of the nurses as well as the number of hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides an impressive 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. Finally, we also considered some quality-based metrics. This facility performed well in a few of the quality measures we assessed. For example, in terms of the number of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average. This is generally a reliable indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented with better nursing care.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home was given its next highest category grade in the category of long-term care. We gave this facility a B- in this category, which is a reasonably acceptable score. Our long-term care grade is commonly used to score a facility's performance as a traditional convalescent home, as opposed to focusing more on the skilled nursing services provided by a skilled nursing facility. After looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. We were optimistic to find that this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this place had 2.93 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this figure is quite a bit higher than the national average, this statistic may be skewed for some nursing homes due to the medical complexity of residents.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we looked at was short-term care. In that category, we gave this facility a solid grade of B-. Short-term care grades are based on the facility's quantity of highly-skilled highly skilled professionals. This includes a vast spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides a greater volume of physical therapist hours to its residents than the average nursing home. The last metric we considered in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 41.9 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is actually below average.
Facility Inspections
The final area we looked at is inspections. Inspection ratings are based on a facility's recent government inspections. This nursing home received a C in this category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection scores. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some are relatively insignificant. This place was hit with 8 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were category G through L deficiencies. This indicates that it avoided the more significant categories of deficiencies. Finally, they also received 15 substantiated complaints in recent years. This is certainly not a great sign.
