Facility Inspections
While this place's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B- for that category, which is one of our better scores. Inspection ratings account for several factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. Finally, CMS flagged this nursing home for possible abuse or neglect. This is not what you want to see. We advise you to direct your search elsewhere.
Long-term Care Quality
Incredibly, we gave this nursing home a B- for our long-term care score, which really isn't too bad of a score. For prospective residents seeking a permanent residence rather than skilled nursing, long-term care grades are very important. One of the statistics we considered after nursing hours was vaccines. Thankfully, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 99.68454 percent of its patients. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.71 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home had fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility ended up receiving a rock-bottom grade in our short-term care category. It received an F in this area. Short-term care grades are important for individuals in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually utilizes more highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes a wide range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Considering its weak grade in this area, we weren't stunned to find that this nursing home provided far fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most nursing homes. The last datapoint we considered in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 35.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar metrics doomed this nursing home's short-term care grade.
Nurse Quality
The next area we analyzed is nursing, where this nursing home received a poor grade in this category also. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F for this area, which is definitely somewhat alarming. Our nursing score includes many data points. The most important one is the quantity of hours nurses spent with residents. According to CMS records, this place averaged 3.9 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This was actually above the national average. Keep in mind, however, that when we compute our nursing grades, we apply more weight to hours performed by nurses with a higher level of skill. Despite being above average in terms of nursing hours, this place had really poor scores in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. For starters, we looked at the percent of residents having falls leading to major injury. This facility was at more than 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is quite alarming in light of the fact that many falls could likely be avoided with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the facility's fate of receiving a poor nursing grade.
