Facility Inspections

Grade: A

In addition to performing well in its overall grade, this facility performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A. Inspection scores are based on several items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this category tend to have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This nursing home really excelled in the area of long-term care, where we awarded it a score of A-. Not many facilities performed more favorably in this area. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically provide residents with more supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. After we finished looking at the quantity of nursing care, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia can be a life threatening illness for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not leave this to chance. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

This facility's next best category was its nursing grade, where it received a grade of C. While this didn't quite match its scores in some of the categories discussed above, this is still a decent score. Our nursing category analyzes quite a few components, many of which are associated with quantities of nurse staffing. This place provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other nursing homes. Lastly, while this place got docked a bit for nursing hours per resident, it actually excelled in a few of our quality metrics. With less than five percent of its patients sustaining pressure ulcers, it did very well in this area.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

Moving on to our fourth category, this facility was awarded a grade of C in short-term care, which is generally an acceptable rating. In crafting our short-term care scores, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The objective is to create a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. However, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, closer to half of their patients are able to return home so this figure is below average.
