Facility Inspections
Although we didn't rate this nursing home favorably overall, we actually gave it an excellent grade in the category of inspections, where it received an A-. These inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility received its second most favorable category grade in the category of long-term care. We gave this facility a B- in this category, which is a respectable score. In computing our long-term care ratings, we look at the assistance with daily living received by a facility's patients. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. The last datapoint we assessed was its hospitalization rate. Although it had 2.09 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was not too bad.
Nurse Quality
In addition, we gave this facility an F in the area of nursing care. There are numerous factors included in this area. Many of these factors relate to the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. We do not think quantity of care was the reason for this places poor nursing rating. With 4 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, this place actually surpassed the national average. While it fared well in terms of nursing hours, this facility had poor scores in the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This nursing home was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in both statistics.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we assessed is short-term care. This nursing home was given a rock bottom grade of F in that area. Our short-term care scores are probably most meaningful for those needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally requires more highly-skilled nursing services. This means not merely nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other types of therapy. It appears that this place was subpar in the two key staffing areas we focus on. It provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most other nursing homes. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 16.9 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
