We want to point out that this facility outperformed its overall score in the category of inspections. In fact, it received an excellent government inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our highest grades in this category with an A+. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection scores. One key factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being relatively minor. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple of minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.

This facility's next best category was its long-term care score, where it was awarded a grade of B-. Long-term care scores are based in part on a nursing home's quantity of nursing care. This means a broad range of personal care services, ranging from help with activities of daily living to routine medical services. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. This nursing home keeps its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Moving on to another strength for this facility, it also earned an elite nursing score. In fact, we gave this nursing home an impressive grade of D. There are a variety of datapoints within this grade. Most of these subcategories are tied to levels of nurse staffing. The problem with this nursing home was apparently more based on quality of care than quantity of care. Based on the data, it looks like this place provides an above average 6.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. Out of this total, nearly one quarter of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this nursing home was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and found that this nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic pulled down this facility's nursing grade substantially.

Historical

This facility's least impressive area is short-term care, which is the last area we looked at. In this area, we awarded this facility a D. In crafting our short-term care grades, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to formulate a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Unfortunately, this place was relatively weak in one of the most important staffing areas we assessed. It supplied significantly less physical therapy per resident than most other facilities. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well in this area. In fact, we found that just 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
