One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ long-term care grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. Facilities that receive this type of score in long-term care typically provide consistent around the clock care to ensure residents are kept in good health. One of the factors we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccinations. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a reliable method to avoid negative health outcomes for the elderly population. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility excelled in our nursing rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Nursing ratings are primarily associated with a nursing home's nurse staffing. This facility provided 0.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Alaska in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as employing a system of turning residents even once per day.

This facility also earned a nearly flawless government inspection report. As a result, it earned one of our best grades in that category with an A-. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some are relatively insignificant. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

In the last area, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A- for our short-term care grade. This completed a first-rate profile. Our short-term care grades are critical for individuals needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates more skilled nursing services. This includes a vast scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other types of therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients that who were able to eventually return home from this nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this facility's residents returned home.
