One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ in short-term care. Short-term care grades are typically employed to grade a nursing home's rehabilitation services. To provide highly scored rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to have higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This nursing home is substantially above the national average in terms of its quantity of both physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents. In fact, it provided about 50% more care per resident from both of these care providers than the average facility provided. These are generally good indicators of quality short-term care. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who returned home from this facility. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy, we found that it fared as well as just about any facility with 70.4 percent of its residents returning home. Most facilities are below 50 percent in this statistic.

This facility also received an A+ inspection score, making it one of the rare nursing homes to receive multiple A+'s in our categories. This grade is based on the place's recent inspections. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this area generally have few severe deficiencies. While this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This means that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should note that deficiency-free inspections are rare in this industry.

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A in our nursing category. The nursing grade assesses many factors, most of which are associated with quantities of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided 4.4 hours of nursing care per resident daily, which is among the highest figures in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most skilled levels of nurses. We are really impressed by both of these figures. On top of providing impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home also excelled in the quality measures we looked at. It performed as well as any nursing home in the country in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.

The last area we analyzed is long-term care. We awarded this facility a solid score in this category, with a B-. Although this isn't as strong as many of its other scores, it is nevertheless not a bad grade. Our long-term care scores are based on the facility's quantity of nursing services. This means a vast spectrum of personal care services, ranging from assistance with activities of daily living to routine medical services. In addition to looking at the high level of care provided by nurses aids and other staff at this nursing home, we also were impressed by the nursing home's vaccination data. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is above average. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
