One of the reasons this turned out to be a great facility is that it received a strong short-term care grade. In fact, this proved to be its best category. In that category, we gave this facility an A. In determining our short-term care scores, we scrutinize a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. This area is more often than not a meaningful measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation. Fortunately, it appear that this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 6.1 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Adding to its impressive category grades, this facility also excelled in the category of inspections, where it received an A. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.

Adding to its impressive resume, this nursing home also excelled in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category. Our nursing grade looks at the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of training of the nurses and the quantity of hours spent with residents. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Pennsylvania in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a protocol of moving a patient even once per day.

The next category we looked at is long-term care. In that category, we gave this facility a decent grade of C. This is this facility's worst area. For prospective patients in need of a permanent residence as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 86.25592 percent of its residents. This is significantly less than the national average. Fortunately, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
