Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

On top of earning a strong overall grade, this nursing home fared well in short-term care. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which is one of our best scores. Short-term care scores are based on a nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This means a broad scope of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, not to mention other variations of therapy. This facility is the gold standard in terms of skilled nursing staffing. It provided approximately 50% more registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than a typical nursing home. This is what we look for when assessing a facility in this category. The final statistic we assessed in this area is the number of patients who who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Pennsylvania in this area with 68.7 percent of its patients returning home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

In addition, this nursing home also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A. Few nursing homes performed as well in this category. These inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This nursing home received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered severe. This tells you that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies to be an imminent threat to resident health or safety. A few relatively minor dings are not the end of the world.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility received a very good nursing grade this year as well. It received one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B+. In determining a facility's nursing rating, we assess the amount of time nurses are with patients as well as the levels of training of the nurses. This nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Approximately a quarter of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are among the most skilled nurses. This is an impressive percentage of skilled nursing care. We weight these hours performed by these types of nurses more in determining our nursing scores. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can often be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The last category we analyzed is long-term care. This nursing home was awarded a very good long-term care grade this year, with a C. Although this isn't as dominant as many of its other grades, this is nevertheless a decent rating in this area. Long-term care ratings are important for patients seeking personal care. One of the criteria we considered after nursing hours was vaccines. Thankfully, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Lastly, this place was also able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
