Although this nursing home's overall score was terrible, it actually fared pretty well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B+ for that area, which is one of our better scores. Inspection scores are tied to several items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important thing to look for on these reports. Most importantly, you should avoid nursing homes that have severe deficiencies associated with risks to resident well being. While this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.

This nursing home's second most favorable score is long-term care, but it nevertheless received a grade of just D in that category. This still happens to be a well below average grade. Long-term care scores in this range generally are a bad sign for the quantity and quality of care provided by nurses and aids, as well as the levels of routine medical care available. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. As it turns out, this nursing home gave the vaccine to a relatively low 88.41808 percent of its residents, which is quite a bit lower than we expected. We were stunned with its hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 4.77 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is more than double the national average. This is certainly an alarming figure.

Sadly, this facility received an F for its short-term care score. With our short-term care score, we endeavor to craft a valuable measure for rehabilitation. In this process, we analyze a facility's scope of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Given its grade in this area, we were not surprised to discover that this nursing home is well below average in terms of the number of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its residents based on the metrics we assessed. Honestly, this was about what we expected to find. The final datapoint we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients that ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 39.6 percent of its residents returning home.

The last category we graded was nursing, where this facility received a very poor score in this area as well. We gave it an abysmal F for this area, which is definitely a major disappointment. In computing a nursing home's nursing grade, we assess the quantity of hours nurses spend with patients and the levels of training of those nurses. This facility provided just 3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This figure is far below average. This place also had abysmal scores in several of the quality-based measures to pair with its low nursing hour totals. For starters, we looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers. This nursing home was at more than twice the national average in this metric. This is concerning when you consider that so many bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the facility's fate of receiving a poor nursing score.
