Facility Inspections
In addition to being a respectable facility overall, this facility really excelled in the category of inspections, where it received a grade of A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Inspection scores account for several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better scores in this area typically have very few of these severe deficiencies. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Long-term Care Quality
We also gave this nursing home a respectable grade in the area of long-term care, where it received a grade of B-. If you are looking for services other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care scores. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is more than the majority of nursing homes. This place was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.17 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a substantially better hospitalization rate than the average nursing home.
Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category was its nursing grade, where it received a grade of C. Nursing scores are tied to nurse staffing levels. According to its CMS data, this facility provided an average of 3.9 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis, which was above average. Finally, we also weighed some quality-based measures. This nursing home performed well in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this facility beat the national average. This is typically a reliable indicator that a nursing home has sufficient quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented with better nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to our final category, we awarded this nursing home a D for our short-term care category. This was the facility's weakest category rating. In forming these short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The goal is to formulate a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. With a score this poor for this area, we were not shocked to find that this nursing home was below average in several staffing areas we looked at. In fact, it provided substantially fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other facilities. Finally, we assessed the number of residents who ultimately returned home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 37.4 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
