Facility Inspections
To pair with its favorable overall performance, we awarded this facility a grade of A for our inspections rating. Inspection scores weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this area generally have very few of these severe deficiencies. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
Among this facility's other strengths is its elite nursing grade. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of A-. Our nursing rating is mostly based on a nursing home's nurse staffing. With 4.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day, this nursing home surpassed the overwhelming majority of facilities. Finally, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. In terms of the percentage of its residents suffering falls leading to serious injury, this nursing home performed as well as any facility in the country.
Long-term Care Quality
The third category we looked at was long-term care. This facility was awarded an above average long-term care score, with a grade of B in the area. Facilities that do well in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. On top of providing elite levels of nursing care and other staffing, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This statistic is also much higher than the average nursing home. This combination proved to be effective as this place keeps its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.33 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we graded is short-term care. We gave it a grade of B- in that category. This is a decent grade in this category. In crafting these short-term care scores, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to formulate a tool for comparing the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents who eventually returned home from this nursing home. We found that 41.5 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was actually well below average.
