Facility Inspections
In addition to performing well overall, this nursing home also earned nearly flawless government inspections. Therefore, it received one of our best scores in that category with an A+. These inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This nursing home was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This tells you that the inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies an imminent risk to resident safety or health. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in this industry.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility performed well in the category of long-term care. As a result, we awarded it a score of A- for that category, which happens to be one of our most dominant grades. Facilities that do well in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. One of the datapoints we considered after nurse's aid hours was vaccines. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccination to 96.88716 percent of its patients. This is a great way to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for the elderly population. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 3.24 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this wasn't as impressive as most of its other scores in this category, this number can be skewed for some nursing homes due to some of the preexisting medical conditions of patients.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was awarded an impressive short-term care score. In fact, we awarded it an above average score of B+ in this category. In the area of short-term care, we endeavor to evaluate indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We analyze a facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. We were quite impressed to learn that this facility provides its residents substantially more hours of physical therapy than most other nursing homes. The last datapoint we assessed in this category is the number of patients who eventually returned home from the facility. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Missouri in this area with 57.8 percent of its residents returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
The last area we looked at was nursing. We gave this nursing home an acceptable score in that area, with a B-. While this was not as high as many of this facility's other grades, it is still not a poor grade. Our nursing grade is based on the facility's level of nurse staffing. We factor in both the levels of skill of those nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with patients. This place provides an impressive 4.5 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is a greater quantity of nursing care than that provided by most facilities. Finally, we also factored some quality-based metrics into our nursing grades. Specifically, we looked at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these metrics as reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
