Facility Inspections
We also wanted to point out that this facility has received near flawless inspections in recent years. We gave them an A+ in this area. These inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this place had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Adding to its first-rate accomplishments in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a score of A- for its long-term care score. Nursing homes that receive this type of score in long-term care typically provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure patients are well cared for. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 97.45763 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly is often a life or death condition for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not leave this to chance. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.44 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also fared very well in the area of short-term care, where it received a score of A-. Few facilities received a better grade in this category. Short-term care grades are often employed to gauge a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation To have highly rated rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must have better levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more than 50% more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. The last measure we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community. We found that this facility was above average with 54 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
The last area we looked at was nursing. We awarded this nursing home one of our more favorable grades in that category, with a B. Although this was not as favorable as many of its other scores, it is nevertheless a fine grade. When computing a nursing home's nursing grade, we consider the amount of time nurses are with residents and the level of skill of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which was above the national average. Finally, this nursing home also excelled in several quality-based metrics we looked at. With less than five percent of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, this place performed as well as any nursing home the country in this category. This is often a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Many pressure ulcers can be avoided by offering better nursing care and a protocol of moving patients more often.
