Long-term Care Quality
In addition to receiving a strong overall score, this facility fared well in long-term care. In fact, we gave it an A+ for that category, which is one of our highest scores. When facilities receive a grade in this range in long-term care it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is significantly higher than most nursing homes. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Adding to its impressive grades, we awarded this nursing home an A+ for inspections. Our inspection ratings account for several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with better grades in this category generally have very few severe deficiencies. This place was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This means that CMS did not deem any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Does this page answer your questions about Colonial Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Home?
Turning to the category of nursing care, this facility didn't perform quite as well in this area as some of the categories discussed above. Nevertheless, a grade of C in this category is by no means a bad score. Nursing ratings are tied to quantity of nursing care available. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility surprisingly fared better in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. In fact, it performed well in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care. In some cases, the quality of nursing care is every bit as important as the number of hours of care provided.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's worst category was short-term care, which is the final category we looked at. Unfortunately, we gave it an F for this category. In spite of multiple excellent grades in other categories, this score is still somewhat of a concern so we would like to to make sure you are aware. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to evaluate measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. In this nursing home's case, it looks like it offered fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the typical facility. Finally, we assessed the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that just 3.4 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.
