Short-term Care Quality
In addition to performing well overall, this facility received high marks in the area of short-term care as well. It received our highest grade in that category with an A+. In determining our short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This score is typically a meaningful measure of the nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. This nursing home excelled in the two key staffing areas we assessed. In fact, it offered about 50% more care from registered nurses and physical therapists than the typical facility. This is typically an encouraging sign. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the country in this area with 69.3 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. Nursing proved to be its second best category grade. In that area, we gave this nursing home an A+. Our nursing grade focuses on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We weigh both the levels of skill of those nurses and the quantity of hours spent with patients. This place provided 6.5 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which is among the higher totals in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most skilled levels of nurses. We were really impressed by both of these statistics. On top of offering high levels of care, this facility also performed well in several of the quality measures we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering falls leading to serious injury, this nursing home performed as well as any nursing home the country. Preventing serious falls is typically an indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Facility Inspections
The next category we looked at was inspections, where this facility also received an A+ grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this place had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we rated is long-term care. We awarded them another superb score of A+ in this area. This rounded out a amazing profile of A+'s. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. On top of looking at the elite level of care provided by nurses aids and other staff at this nursing home, we also were impressed by the nursing home's vaccination data. For example, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. The last statistic we assessed was the facility's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this place had 1.92 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is middle of the pack in this area.
