Nurse Quality

Grade: A

On top of being a quality nursing home overall, this nursing home really excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A. Few facilities fared better in this category. We assessed the levels of nurses working for the nursing home, in addition to the quantity of time those nurses worked with patients, in calculating our rating in this area. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility New Mexico in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by having a system of turning a patient even once per day.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

In addition, this facility also performed well in inspections, which is based on the facility's government inspections. We gave it a grade of A- for that area. These inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This nursing home received a favorable long-term care grade as well. We gave it one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B+. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. After considering the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 90.47619 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which happens to be a bit lower than we expected but still a reasonably acceptable percentage. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The final area we scored is short-term care, in which this nursing home was given a grade of B. This facility turned out to be strong across the board. In crafting our short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The goal is to formulate a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. However, according to the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
