Facility Inspections
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this category most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also received an A+ long-term care grade, rendering it one of the few facilities to be given more than one A+ category grades. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in long-term care it typically means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. Once we assessed the amount of nursing care, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 99.5 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly is often a life threatening health condition for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a facility doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A- in our nursing category. Our nursing grade consists of many factors, but the most important one is the quantity of nurse hours spent with patients. This particular nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as employing a policy of moving a patient at least once a day.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we scored turned out to be this facility's weakest category. However, even its weakest link would likely be a strength for many nursing homes. We awarded it a strong grade of B in our short-term care category. In computing our short-term care scores, we look at the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This score is frequently a reliable assessment of a facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The last datapoint we assessed in this area is the number of residents who were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.
