Facility Inspections
On top of being an elite nursing home overall, this nursing home also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A+. Very few facilities performed as well in this area. Inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
We also would like to alert you to the fact that this nursing home received a superb score of A in our long-term care area. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. One of the factors we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccines. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 98.00995 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths for the senior population. The last datapoint we assessed was its hospitalization rate. Here we found that this place had 3.09 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this admittedly wasn't as impressive as most of its other scores in this area, this number can be skewed for some nursing homes based on the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning our next category, we awarded this nursing home a score of A for our short-term care rating. This is a very strong grade. Our short-term care grades are considered to be more meaningful for folks in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually utilizes higher levels of skilled nursing services. This means not merely nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other types of therapy. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The final datapoint we considered in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. This place performed as well as just about any facility in Texas in this area with 79.3 percent of its patients returning home. For most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
The next category we rated was this facility's poorest category. However, even its lowest point would be a strength for many nursing homes. We awarded it a favorable grade of B for nursing. We assessed the levels of nurses working for the nursing home, in addition to the number of hours the nurses spent with residents, in determining our rating in this category. This nursing home provides 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these data points as reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
