Facility Inspections
In addition to being a respectable facility overall, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it earned an A+. Few facilities performed better in this area. Inspection ratings account for several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher scores in this category usually have very few severe deficiencies. This nursing home was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This means that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies an immediate threat to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received a positive long-term care score. In fact, we gave them a grade of B+ in this area, which happens to be one of our better. When facilities receive this type of grade in long-term care it is usually a good sign for patient care and indicates that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. One of the factors we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccinations. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This is a reliable method to minimize unnecessary hospitalizations for the elderly population. This facility was also able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.04 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a much better hospitalization rate than most nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
We gave this nursing home just a D for our short-term care score. This is not a very good score. In our short-term care rating, we attempt to craft a sound barometer for rehabilitation services. In this process, we assess the facility's level of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. With a score this poor for this category, we weren't stunned to find that this nursing home was well below average in the two key staffing figures we looked at. It supplied substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most facilities. The final item we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who ultimately returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 38.4 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home's weakest category is nursing, which is the final category we scored. It received an F in this category. Despite several solid scores in other categories, this grade is nevertheless alarming so we would like to to make sure you are aware. In computing our nursing ratings, we assess both nursing hours and the skill levels of those nurses. This nursing home provides 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is slightly below average. On top of being below average in nursing hours per resident, this place also had poor marks in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This nursing home was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in both of these metrics. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These metrics pulled down this facility's nursing grade significantly.
