Facility Inspections
In addition to performing well overall, this facility received an excellent inspection report. As a result, we gave it one of our best grades in this category with an A. Inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also was given a first-rate short-term care grade. In fact, this ended up being this facility's second strongest category score. In that category, this facility received a score of A. Our short-term care scores are believed to be more important for residents needing rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation generally mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes not just nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It provided more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the typical nursing home. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return home from this nursing home. In addition to excelling in the area of physical therapy hours, we found that it performed as well as just about any facility in this area with 58.1 percent of its patients returning home. Most nursing homes are below 50 percent in this metric.
Nurse Quality
Adding to its impressive resume, this nursing home also excelled in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category. Our nursing rating weighs a host of factors. The most important variable is the number of hours nurses spent with patients. With 4.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, this nursing home surpassed the overwhelming majority of facilities. Finally, this facility also excelled in several of the quality measures we assessed. With less than five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed as well as any facility the country in this category. This is often a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls. Many pressure ulcers can be avoided by providing better nursing care and a system of moving patients more often.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on to the fourth category, this nursing home received an excellent long-term care rating. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- in that category, resulting in this facility receiving straight A's. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. One of the factors we considered in addition to this facility's quality nursing hours is vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths for the elderly. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.69 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than most nursing homes.
