Facility Inspections
This nursing home received a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its excellent health inspections in recent years. We gave them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Additionally, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B+ in our long-term care category. This is one of our more impressive grades. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. After assessing the very impressive nursing hours and other staffing provided by this nursing home, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 99.61089 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is much higher than most nursing homes. This combination proved to be successful as this facility keeps its patients out of the hospital. Although it had 2.34 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was better than most nursing homes due to it having some more complicated patients.
Nurse Quality
Another strength of this facility is its favorable grade in nursing. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with an D. Nursing scores are based largely on quantity of nursing care available. Quantity of nursing care does not appear to be the problem here. Based on the data, it looks like this nursing home provides an above average 4.2 hours per resident per day. This is more nursing care than most facilities offer. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this facility was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and found that this facility was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic pulled down this nursing home's nursing grade substantially.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we graded was short-term care, turned out to be this nursing home's least impressive category. We gave this facility a grade of D in that category. This was one of the few weak links in an otherwise impressive report card. Our short-term care scores are believed to be more important for individuals requiring rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. This means not just nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who ultimately returned home from this nursing home. This facility didn't fare well in this area. In fact, we found that just 25.9 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
