Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was not bad, it really excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that category, which is one of our highest scores. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection ratings. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively minor. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that we were able to find deficiency data for this facility. We wish we had more data for this facility. Without having access to deficiency related data, it ended up being a challenge to evaluate it in the area of inspections.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this nursing home's more favorable category grades was in the category of long-term care. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B. It actually outpaced most facilities in this area. Facilities that excel in this category typically provide residents with more supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. After assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 98.86878 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents out of the hospital. The last datapoint we assessed was the facility's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this facility had 5.28 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this admittedly wasn't as strong as most of its other scores in this category, this figure may be skewed for some nursing homes based on some of the medical complexity of patients.
Nurse Quality
Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of C, which is a decent grade. We looked at the skill-level of nurses at the facility, as well as the number of hours the nurses spent with patients, in computing our grade in this area. This nursing home provides 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based measures, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the highest total nursing hours per resident, this nursing home performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is typically a reliable indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Many falls could be avoided if a facility supplies enough nurses to assist its residents.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we graded is short-term care. Sadly, it received an abysmal F in this area, which is a rock bottom score. This is obviously a major disappointment. Our short-term care grades are thought to be more meaningful for those needing rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation typically requires more skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes not only nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The last statistic we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who returned home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 29.1 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
