Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this ended up being a quality nursing home is that it received an impressive inspection rating. Inspections turned out to be its best category. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of A. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places with better grades in this area typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This nursing home was hit with 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that the government inspectors did not deem any of these deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to patient safety or health. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received a strong short-term care grade. In fact, we gave it an above average grade of B+ in this area. With our short-term care rating, we attempt to forge a valuable barometer for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we assess a nursing home's level of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The last statistic we considered in this area is the percentage of patients who ultimately returned home from the facility. This turned out to be more of a strength for this facility. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Missouri in this area with 59.2 percent of its patients returning home. With most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents ever return home.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received a favorable long-term care grade. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B+ in this area. When nursing homes receive this kind of grade in this category it is a good sign for patient care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. One of the factors we considered on top of nurse's aid hours was vaccinations. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 93.95973 percent of its patients. This is a reliable method to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the senior population. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 3.21 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this admittedly wasn't as strong as some of its other scores in this category, this number may be skewed for some nursing homes based on some of the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
Nurse Quality
The last area we looked at is nursing. This nursing home was awarded an impressive nursing score this year, with a B-. Even though this wasn't quite as dominant as several of its other scores, this remains an acceptable score for this category. Nursing ratings are mostly based on a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. According to CMS records, this place averaged 4 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. Keep in mind that when we calculate our nursing grades, we add more weight to hours performed by nurses with a higher level of skill. Finally, this place was relatively weak in two of the major areas we look at, with below average scores for minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
