Short-term Care Quality
In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ in the area of short-term care. In computing our short-term care ratings, we look at a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This score is generally a solid assessment of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. This nursing home is the gold standard in terms of skilled nursing staffing. In fact, it provided about 50% more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than the average nursing home. This is what we look for when assessing a facility in this category. The last measure we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Hawaii in this area with 79.8 percent of its patients returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Adding to this facility's impressive resume, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. Our inspection grades are tied to items found on the a nursing home's recent inspections. Places that receive favorable grades in this category typically have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily something to panic about.
Adding to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent nursing score, with a grade of A. Our nursing grade focuses on the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We weigh both the levels of licensure of the nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with residents. This place boasts a really impressive 5 hours of nursing care per patient daily, of which a significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. This is one of the higher totals of nursing hours we found at any facility. On top of offering high levels of care, this facility also excelled in the quality measures we assessed. For example, it performed as well as any facility in the state in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these datapoints as reliable measures of the caliber of nursing care being provided.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we analyzed was long-term care. In this area, we awarded this facility an acceptable grade of B-. This proved to be this facility's least impressive category. Our long-term care grades are based on a nursing home's quantity of nursing services. This includes a vast range of personal care services, ranging from help with activities of daily living to routine healthcare services. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. We weren't able to track down this place's vaccination data. Finally, this nursing home was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
