Facility Inspections
Although we gave this nursing home a terrible overall score, we awarded it a grade of A- for our inspections score. This score is far more impressive than the facility's overall grade. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. It is typically in your best interest to avoid facilities that had too many severe deficiencies. While this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This means the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. This turned out to be its second best category grade. In that category, we gave this nursing home an D. When calculating a facility's nursing grade, we consider the quantity of hours nurses are seeing patients and the level of skill of the nurses. This particular place provided a meager 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This figure is far below average. Finally, we also looked at some quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. This facility was above average in two of the statistics we focus on, with good marks for avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we looked at is long-term care. This facility's received a poor long-term care score where it received an F. Facilities that receive this kind of score in this category likely don't provide the kind of consistent 24/7 care that some other facilities offer. After looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination statistics. We were concerned by the fact that this nursing home vaccinated just 66.77631 percent of its residents for pneumonia. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. We found that this facility had 2.54 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure is also concerning.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we graded was short-term care. This facility was given a very poor grade of F in this area. Our short-term care grades are considered to be more critical for those needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation usually requires additional skilled nursing services. This includes not just nursing, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The final measure we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 37.1 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar metrics doomed this facility's short-term care grade.
