Facility Inspections
On top of being a first rate nursing home overall, this nursing home performed well in the area of inspections, where it earned an A+. Very few places fared this well in this category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being relatively insignificant. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a score of A+ for its short-term care grade. With our short-term care assessment, we seek to craft a sound barometer for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we analyze a facility's offerings of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. One reason for this nursing home's strong score in this category is it provides more care from registered nurses than a typical facility. The last datapoint we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients that ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. This place performed as well as just about any facility in Wisconsin with 75 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, less than half of their short-term patients return home.
Nurse Quality
Another reason we rated this nursing home so highly is that it received an A+ nursing grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. In computing our nursing ratings, we factor in both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This place provides an incredible 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Out of that total, many of the hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. In addition to providing impressive levels of care, this facility also excelled in the quality measures we looked at. It performed as well as any nursing home in the state in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
Long-term Care Quality
In the last category, this nursing home was given another A+ for its long-term care rating. This completed a remarkable report card of straight A+'s. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care typically provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to providing very favorable levels of nursing care, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients healthy. This combination proved to be effective as this place was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 1.22 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a significantly better hospitalization rate than the majority of nursing homes.
