Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

One of the reasons this ended up being a quality nursing home is that it earned a very impressive inspection score. In fact, inspections turned out to be its best category grade. In this category, we awarded it an A-. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Adding to this facility's list of strengths, it also was awarded a top-shelf long-term care score. We awarded them a strong grade of A- in this category. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in long-term care it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 98.50299 percent of its residents. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The next best category we gave this facility in any area came in the area of short-term care, where we awarded it a grade of B-. Our short-term care grades are based in part on the nursing home's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This includes a vast scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, in addition to other variations of therapy. Unfortunately, it does not look like this facility submitted registered nurse or physical therapist staffing data. The final metric we considered in this area is the number of patients that eventually returned home from the facility. We found that just 5.6 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

Turning to the next area, this facility was awarded a C in nursing, which we consider to be a decent score. We assessed the qualifications of nurses employed by the nursing home, as well as the number of hours the nurses were with residents, in determining our score in this category. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, our nursing scores also consider some quality-focused measures. We especially like to look at the percent of residents who experienced pressure ulcers and major falls. Sometimes these metrics are indicators of the quality of nursing care, since superior care can reduce these issues.
