Facility Inspections
To pair with its favorable overall score, we awarded this facility an A for the area of inspections. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection scores. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be relatively insignificant. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home was awarded strong grades in the category of long-term care as well. As a result, we gave it one of our most dominant grades in that category with a area of A-. Facilities that do well in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. One of the criteria we considered on top of nursing hours is vaccinations. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. This is a proven method to minimize unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the nursing home population. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.38 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than many nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
The third category we looked at was short-term care. This nursing home was awarded an impressive short-term care score, with a B+ in this category. Our short-term care grade is often used to grade a facility's rehabilitation services To have quality rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to provide better levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The final metric we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients that returned home from the facility. This was more of a strength for this nursing home. This place performed as well as just about any nursing home in South Carolina with 58.3 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
The next category we scored is nursing, in which this facility received a C. Even though this is its poorest category rating, this is still not the end of the world. There are several data points included in this area. Most of these data points are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based measures, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed above average in this area.
