On top of receiving a strong overall grade, this facility also earned first-rate inspections in recent years. We gave them one of our higher scores in that area, with an A. Perhaps the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with better scores in this area typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in this industry.

Additionally, this facility also was given favorable long-term care scores in our assessment. Indeed, we gave it one of our better scores in that category, with a grade of B. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. After we finished looking at the amount of nursing care, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia tragically can be a life or death illness for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Adding to its profile, this facility also earned a grade of B for its nursing rating. This is a well above average score in this category. Our nursing grade is based on a number of datapoints. The most heavily weighted variable is the quantity of hours nurses spent with patients. This facility provided 0.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can often be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Turning to our last area, this nursing home was given an acceptable short-term care score of C. In our short-term care grade, we endeavor to create a sound measure for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we analyze a facility's offerings of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The final measure we considered in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 4.5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is actually below average.
