Facility Inspections
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Arguably the most important factor we consider in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this area most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This facility received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This means that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility received strong scores in the area of long-term care as well. Indeed, we awarded it one of our most superb grades in that category with a score of A-. When facilities receive this type of grade in long-term care it is a good sign for resident care and suggests that the facility is well-staffed with nurses and aids. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is far higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. This nursing home also keeps its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 1.59 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility was awarded a strong short-term care score as well. We gave it one of our better grades in that area with a score of B. In computing our short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This grade is typically a meaningful measure of a facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This place performed decently in this area, with 49 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
The next area we assessed was nursing. This nursing home was given a better than average nursing grade this year, with a grade of B-. While this was not nearly as good as some of its other scores, this is nevertheless an acceptable score in that area. There are numerous criteria included in this category. Most of the criteria relate to the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
