Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

This facility really excelled in the category of long-term care, where it received a score of A. Only a select group of nursing homes performed more favorably in this area. When facilities receive this type of score in long-term care it is typically a good sign for resident care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses aids. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 99.6633 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients healthy. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

This facility is also strong in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of B. It outperformed most nursing homes in this category. We scrutinized the licensure of nurses employed by the nursing home, in addition to the quantity of hours those nurses were with residents, in calculating our rating in this area. This facility provided 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as having a system of turning a patient even once per day.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

Switching gears to our next area, this nursing home received a respectable short-term care score. While this was not quite as good as some of its other grades, this is truly not a major area of concern. Our short-term care ratings are based in part on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a broad range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other types of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final metric we looked at in this category is the number of patients that eventually returned home from the facility. We found that just 3.4 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
