Facility Inspections
This nursing home earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its excellent inspection reports in recent years. We gave them an A in this category. Arguably the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this area typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was awarded an impressive long-term care score. Indeed, we gave them a B in that area, which happens to be one of our more favorable scores. For patients in need of a permanent place to live as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 74.10714 percent of its patients. This is somewhat below what we expected but still a respectable figure. Although its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we hoped for, at least this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality
This nursing home's nursing grade appears to be one of its better features. The facility received a grade of C in this category. When calculating a facility's nursing rating, we consider the quantity of hours nurses are with patients as well as the level of licensure of those nurses. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours, this place performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is typically a good indicator that a place has sufficient quality controls in place.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to the final category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of D in our short-term care category. This was the nursing home's least impressive category rating. Of course, this category hurt the nursing home's overall profile to a certain degree. In calculating our short-term care grades, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our purpose is to devise a tool for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. It appears that this facility was subpar in the two key staffing metrics we focus on. The facility provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The final metric we looked at in this area is the number of residents who ultimately were able to return home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 3.9 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
