Facility Inspections
Although we didn't grade this nursing home favorably overall, we did give it an excellent grade in the area of inspections, where it earned an A-. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. It is typically best to avoid nursing homes that have too many severe deficiencies. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. In that area, we gave this facility an C. There are numerous subcategories within this grade. Many of the datapoints are tied to the quantity of nurse staffing. This place provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures. Although this nursing home got docked a bit for nursing hours per resident, it actually excelled in a few of these quality-based measures. With fewer than five percent of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, it fared very well in this subcategory. This is typically an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as employing a protocol of turning a patient more frequently.

Long-term Care Quality
Sadly, we gave this facility an F for its long-term care grade. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. One of the criteria we considered in addition to nurse's aid hours was vaccines. Fortunately, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 98.15498 percent of its patients. Surprisingly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had fewer hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. Sadly, some of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to the last area, this facility really did not perform very well in this area either. Due to a bottom of the barrel grade of F in short-term care, this is really as bad as it gets. Short-term care grades are often used to score a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To provide highly scored rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to offer better levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The last statistic we considered in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to return home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 3.5 percent of its residents returning home.
