Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home received a favorable short-term care grade this year. We awarded them a strong grade in that area, with a grade of B+. This is a better grade than the facility's overall score and was a boost to its overall profile. Our short-term care ratings are believed to be more meaningful for individuals in need of a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally requires additional highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not only nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every facility employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the information they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This proved to be a real strength for this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the country in this area with 100 percent of its patients returning home. This is a substantially better rate than most facilities.
Facility Inspections
We also want to emphasize this place's nearly flawless inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of B+ in this category. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with higher scores in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This means the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in this industry.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was given an impressive long-term care grade. Indeed, we gave them a grade of B+ in that category, which is one of our more favorable scores. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to provide residents with closer supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is much higher than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. With 1.95 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home was just about middle of the pack in this area.
Nurse Quality
The last category we scored is nursing, proved to be this nursing home's worst category. We awarded this nursing home a grade of D in this area. This really was one of just a couple of dings in a very solid report card. The nursing score analyzes several subcategories, however, the main one is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home offered only 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. On top of its subpar nursing hour totals, this place also earned poor marks in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We found that more of this facility's patients suffered falls leading to serious injury. We believe that many falls could likely be avoided with better nursing care. This statistic contributed to this place receiving a poor nursing rating.
