Short-term Care Quality
In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ in the area of short-term care. In the category of short-term care, we seek to qualify measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is generally an excellent sign. The final statistic we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients that eventually returned home from the facility. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in New Jersey in this area with 71 percent of its patients returning home. For most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
This facility also received an A+ inspection score, making it one of the rare nursing homes to receive multiple A+'s in our categories. This score is based on the place's inspection reports. Inspection grades account for a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with better scores in this category tend to have very few severe deficiencies. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
The third category we analyzed is long-term care. This facility also was awarded an A+ long-term care grade, rendering it one of the few nursing homes to be awarded more than one A+ category grades. Facilities that excel in long-term care typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. On top of looking at the impressive quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff at this nursing home, we also were impressed by the nursing home's record for vaccinations. By way of example, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 98.76923 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. This combination proved to be successful as this facility was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 1.17 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a substantially lower hospitalization rate than the majority of nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
In our last category, this facility also was given a very strong nursing rating, with a grade of A. This finished off a very impressive profile. Our nursing grade looks at the facility's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of skill of those nurses and the amount of time spent with residents. This facility boasts a really impressive 4.5 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis, of which a significant portion was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly highly trained levels of nurses. On top of offering impressive levels of care, this place also excelled in several of the quality measures we assessed. With under five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it fared as well as any nursing home the country in this category.
