Long-term Care Quality
On top of performing well in its overall score, this facility earned even higher grades in long-term care. It received one of our best scores in that category with an A-. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 92.87926 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is a few points less than we anticipated but still a reasonably acceptable percentage. Fortunately, this facility was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 1 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a substantially lower hospitalization rate than the average nursing home.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Our inspection scores are based on several items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that receive favorable grades in this area tend to have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This place was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies to cause an immediate risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. We analyzed the skill-level of nurses at the nursing home, in addition to the quantity of hours the nurses spent with residents, in computing our grade in this category. This nursing home offers high levels of nursing care, averaging 3.9 hours per resident on a daily basis. This is more nursing care than most nursing homes provide. Finally, we also looked at nursing quality measures in determining our nursing scores. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as predictive measures of the caliber of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to our fourth area, this facility was given a strong short-term care score. We awarded it a grade of B+ in that area, topping off one of our finer profiles. With our short-term care category, we strive to craft a valuable measure for rehabilitation services. In this process, we look at the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The final datapoint we assessed in this category is the number of residents that who were able to eventually return home from the facility. It fared better than most facilities in this area with 49.5 percent of its patients returning home. For most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
