One of the reasons this proved to be a quality facility is that it received a very impressive short-term care score. In fact, short-term care turned out to be its best category. In that area, we awarded this nursing home an A. Our short-term care grades are vital for patients seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a broad spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. The last item we assessed in this category is the number of residents who returned home from the nursing home. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Idaho in this area with 62.2 percent of its patients returning home. For most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

This facility received high grades in the area of nursing as well. In fact, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A-. We analyzed the licensure of nurses at the facility, as well as the quantity of time the nurses were with residents, in calculating our score in this area. This facility provides an incredible 4.4 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is far better than what is provided by most facilities. Finally, this place also performed well in several of the quality measures we assessed. For example, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented with better nursing care and having a policy of regularly turning residents to avoid bed sores.

This facility earned a B for its inspections score. This is an above average score in this category. Perhaps the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This place was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This indicates that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies an immediate threat to resident safety or health. A couple relatively minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

Historical

Turning to the final area, this nursing home did not perform very well. With a poor grade of F in that category, this was obviously this facility's weakest grade. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. Based on its grade in this category, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that this facility received good marks in both nursing hours and its vaccination records. In fact, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 95.43379 percent of its patients. This percentage is higher than the majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this place also was not as bad as we expected at keeping its residents out of the hospital. While it had 1.72 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score wasn't bad since it had some more complicated patients.
