Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this ended up being a strong nursing home is that it earned an impressive inspection score. In fact, inspections turned out to be its best category. In this category, we gave this facility an A-. Inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple relatively minor deficiencies are not something to panic about.
Nurse Quality
Building on its strong performance in other categories, we gave this nursing home a grade of B+ for our nursing rating. Nursing ratings are largely associated with a facility's level of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality measures in determining our nursing grades. This facility performed very well when it comes to avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Short-term Care Quality
Turning to our third area, this facility also received a score of B for its short-term care rating. This is a well above average score in this area. In computing these short-term care scores, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to devise a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various facilities. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, based on the information they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last item we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that 4.6 percent of this nursing home's patients were able to return home.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we scored is long-term care. We awarded it a B- in that area. This is basically a middle of the road grade in this category. If you are seeking services other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care scores. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is more than most nursing homes. This facility also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
