Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

We want to point out that this nursing home outperformed its overall score in the category of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that area with an A-. Inspection grades account for a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher scores in this category tend to have few severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple of minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

We also awarded this nursing home a respectable score in the area of long-term care, where we awarded it a B-. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary objective is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. After considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination record. We were optimistic to find that this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. This place keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

This facility's next best category was its nursing grade, where it received a grade of C. In determining our nursing grades, we analyze both staffing levels and the training levels of those nurses. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is a low total compared with most facilities. Lastly, although this nursing home got dinged a bit for its nursing hours per resident, it excelled in some of our quality-based metrics. With fewer than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it did very well in this metric.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

Switching gears to the next category, we awarded this nursing home a D for the area of short-term care. This is the facility's least impressive category rating. In calculating our short-term care grades, we look at the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This area is often a reliable assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation. Given its score in this area, we weren't stunned to learn that this nursing home is well below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the data we looked at. Frankly, this was what we expected to find. The final metric we looked at in this category is the number of patients who ultimately were able to return home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 0 percent of its residents returning home.
