Facility Inspections
The main reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it received an excellent inspection score. Its inspection grade was far better than its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave it an A+. Our inspection grades are based on several datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that score well in this category tend to have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Although this place had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's second most favorable category ended up being its short-term care score, where it was awarded a B-. In calculating these short-term care scores, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our goal is to formulate a tool for comparing the rehabilitation services of different facilities. One of this nursing home's strengths is physical therapy hours. We found that it offers more hours with physical therapists to its residents than most facilities. The final item we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that it was above average in this metric with 50.3 percent of its residents returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
We also awarded this facility a middle of the road grade in the category of long-term care, where we awarded it a grade of C. Our long-term care grade assesses a facility's assistance with daily living instead of the highly skilled therapy and healthcare services that are critical to a rehabilitation facility. In addition to considering the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. While it had 3.06 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was not too bad.
Nurse Quality
Switching gears to our next category, we gave this facility a D for our nursing category. This is the facility's worst category rating. When calculating our nursing grades, we factor in both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the skill levels of the nurses. This nursing home averages 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below the national average. Unfortunately, this facility also had abysmal marks in some of the quality-based measures to go along with its weak nursing hours. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and we were disappointed. This place was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this measure.
