We gave this nursing home one of our higher grades in the area of short-term care, where it received a grade of A. This is much better than the nursing home's overall score, which was certainly not elite. Short-term care ratings are meaningful for residents looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a broad range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. This place performed as well as just about any facility in the country with 72.8 percent of its patients returning home. Most facilities are below 50 percent in this statistic.

This facility also excelled in the category of nursing, where it received an B+. Few nursing homes fared better in this area. Nursing ratings are largely associated with a facility's nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as good measures of the caliber of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

Historical

The third category we analyzed was long-term care. In that category, we awarded this facility a B. It actually performed better than most facilities in this area. Facilities that do well in this category typically provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. Once we concluded our assessment of the quantity of care provided by nurses, we then looked at the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 99.02439 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia is too frequently a life threatening condition for nursing home patients so we prefer when a facility doesn't leave its residents vulnerable. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.67 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility has less hospitalizations than the average nursing home.

Looking to our last category of inspections, we gave this facility a just D, which is a relatively poor grade. Our inspection grade is based on the facility's government inspections. Since this data is collected by independent government inspectors, we place significant weight on it in our overall grades. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection grades. One of those factors is health deficiencies. We would pay close attention to the level of severity of those deficiencies. This particular nursing home had 4 deficiencies on its inspection report. The only positive thing we can say is that none of these deficiencies were in the categories that indicate that they posed a risk to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility also received 2 substantiated complaints in recent years. This is yet another bad sign.
