In addition to performing well in its overall grade, this nursing home performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A+. Inspection grades are based on several datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this area typically have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

Contributing to this facility's list of achievements, it also was awarded a superb short-term care grade. We awarded them a strong grade of A- in this category. Our short-term care ratings are crucial for patients looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically utilizes higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a wide range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last metric we assessed in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We discovered that 6 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.

Turning to the area of nursing care, this was not one of this facility's strong suits. We awarded it a grade of D in this category. Clearly, this facility performed much better in the categories discussed above. When computing our nursing ratings, we analyze both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing scores. This nursing home fared well in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these metrics to be indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Switching gears to our final area, we gave this facility a grade of D in long-term care. This was the facility's worst category rating. Naturally, this score hurt the nursing home's overall profile to some degree. In a long-term care environment, the primary goal is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is higher than the average nursing home. Surprisingly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility has fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
