Registered Staff Hours
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's best category grade came in our short-term care rating. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a B+. In computing these short-term care scores, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to create a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Unfortunately, we weren't able to track down registered nurse or physical therapy staffing data for this facility. The final datapoint we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that 6.4 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.
Facility Inspections
This facility's inspection grade exceeded its overall score as well. We awarded them one of our better grades in that category, with a B. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are quite insignificant. This nursing home was assessed 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This indicates that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to resident safety or health. A couple of minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

Long-term Care Quality
The third highest area we gave this nursing home in any category came in the area of long-term care, where we gave it a grade of C. For patients seeking a permanent residence as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. One of the criteria we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccines. Fortunately, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. Finally, this facility was also able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Nurse Quality
The last category we graded was nursing. We awarded it a grade of C in this category. This is basically a middle of the road grade in this area. Our nursing grade includes many components, many of which are based on nursing hours. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics. Although this facility got docked a bit for its nursing hours per resident, it excelled in a few of these quality-based metrics. With fewer than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it fared well in this subcategory. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as employing a system of turning a resident even once per day.
