Facility Inspections
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this facility an A+ for our inspection category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating our inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some are quite insignificant. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing rating. In that category, we gave this nursing home an A+. Our nursing grade is based on many factors, many of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by employing a protocol of turning patients at least once a day.

Long-term Care Quality
In the third area we looked at, this nursing home received high marks in the category of long-term care. Consequently, it was given one of our most impressive grades in that category with a grade of of A+. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it typically means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. After considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is significantly higher than the average nursing home. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we analyzed is short-term care, where this facility received an A. This completed a first-rate report card. Not many nursing homes received an A- or higher in all four categories. In determining these short-term care ratings, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The objective is to formulate a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. We found that 5.2 percent of this facility's residents returned home.
