Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

In addition to being a quality facility overall, this place also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A+. Few facilities fared better in that area. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Places with better grades in this category most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Among the reasons we graded this facility so well is that it was awarded a dominant long-term care score. In fact, long-term care turned out to be its second most favorable category score. In that category, we gave this nursing home a score of A-. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it typically means it has plenty of staff and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. One of the criteria we considered in addition to nurse's aid hours was vaccinations. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 94.5 percent of its residents. This is a reliable method to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the aged 65 and up population. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facility's next best category grade came in the area of nursing. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of B-. This wasn't quite on par with some of its other category grades mentioned above. When calculating a facility's nursing grade, we assess the quantity of hours nurses commit to residents and the level of licensure of the nurses. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this place actually fared better in some of the quality measures we looked at. It performed well in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

Moving on to our final category, this facility received a C for short-term care, which is a respectable grade. Our short-term care grades are based in part on the nursing home's quantity of skilled nursing services. This includes a vast range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last item we assessed in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 4.7 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is below average.
