Facility Inspections
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. Inspection grades weigh several factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this category tend to have few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so favorably is that it was awarded a strong long-term care grade. Indeed, long-term care turned out to be its second best category grade. In that category, we gave this facility a score of A. In a long-term care environment, the primary objective is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 92.38095 percent of its patients. This is slightly less than we were hoping for but still a decent figure. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category grade came in the area of nursing. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of C. This wasn't quite on par with some of its other category grades mentioned above. We weighed the levels of nurses working for the facility, as well as the number of hours the nurses were with residents, in computing our rating in this category. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, although this facility got docked a bit for nursing hours per resident, it actually excelled in some of our quality measures. With less than five percent of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, it did very well in this statistic.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we assessed is short-term care, which proved to be this nursing home's weakest area. We gave this facility a grade of D in that area. Sadly, this grade pulled down the nursing home's overall profile a bit. In the category of short-term care, we endeavor to assess indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We look at a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Unfortunately, we discovered that this place offered less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most other nursing homes. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This definitely was not a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 5.3 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, around half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
