Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was decent, it really excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which is one of our best scores. Inspection grades are tied to items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this category tend to have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Based on this, we had a generally favorable view of this facility's inspections.
Short-term Care Quality
We also gave this nursing home an impressive grade in short-term care. This nursing home earned a B in this category, which is one of our more impressive scores. Our short-term care grade is generally employed to measure a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To provide highly scored rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to offer better levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. Finally, we considered the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home, which as an area this nursing home performed much more favorably. It outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes with 59.7 percent of its residents returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.
Nurse Quality
Another strength of this nursing home is its favorable grade in nursing. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of D. The nursing grade consists of many components, but the main one is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. We do not think quantity of care was the reason for this places poor nursing rating. With 4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, this nursing home actually surpassed the national average. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this nursing home didn't perform as well in the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This place was above the national average in both metrics.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to our fourth area, we gave this nursing home a D in the area of long-term care. This was the facility's weakest category score. Nursing homes that don't fare well in long-term care typically are not as well-staffed and are lagging in a few of the areas of routine medical care we looked at. While we determined this facility had an above average quantity of nursing care provided by aids and other nursing staff, we found its vaccination rate to be somewhat lower than we expected. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to just 90.06211 percent of its residents. This is a figure we'd really like to see this nursing home bring up. Surprisingly, this nursing home was actually decent at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 1.36 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. This was its best score in this category.
