Facility Inspections

Grade: A

In addition to being a respectable facility overall, this facility also excelled in the category of inspections, where it earned a grade of A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Inspection ratings are based on several datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that excel in this area typically have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

Additionally, we awarded this facility a B+ in our long-term care category. This happens to be one of our better grades. For residents seeking a permanent residence as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. After looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 93.877556 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is a few points lower than we expected but still a reasonably acceptable figure. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

We awarded this facility just a D for our short-term care grade. This is not one of our better scores. In the area of short-term care, we try to assess measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We analyze a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that just 0 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

Switching gears to the final category, this nursing home did not perform very well. With a bottom of the barrel grade of F in nursing, this was its weakest category. We weighed the qualifications of nurses working for the facility, as well as the number of hours those nurses spent with residents, in computing our score in this category. This facility provided only 0.2 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing ratings. This place performed well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these metrics to be reliable measures of the quality of nursing care.
