Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall grade was not bad, it really fared well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that category, which is one of our highest scores. These inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This nursing home was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that CMS did not deem any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we gave this facility a grade of B+ in our long-term care category. This is one of our higher scores. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. On top of offering elite levels of nursing care, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This statistic is also much better than the average nursing home. This combination proved to be effective as this facility also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Nurse Quality
One of this facility's better category grades was in the area of nursing care. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of C. Our nursing grade is mostly tied to the nursing home's nurse staffing. This nursing home offers extremely high levels of nursing care, averaging 4.1 hours per resident per day. This is well above average. Finally, our nursing score also includes some relevant quality measures. Although this facility excelled in terms of quantity of nursing hours, it lagged behind in certain metrics that focused on quality. This facility's nursing rating was pulled down by poor performance in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers. We found that 24.2 percent of this facility's patients were suffering from pressure ulcers.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we graded was short-term care, ended up being this facility's weakest category. We awarded this nursing home a D in that area. This is one of the couple of weak links in a very solid report card. In calculating our short-term care scores, we analyze a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This rating is often a meaningful measure of a facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. Unfortunately, we discovered that this facility provides less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This definitely wasn't a strength for this facility. We found that just 21.2 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. At most facilities, around half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
